National Day of Prayer – Sunday 22/03/2020 at 7pm

Light a candle and join the rest of Scotland in prayer at 7pm on Sunday as we come together at this difficult time.

Taking place on Sunday 22 March, people of faith are being encouraged to light a candle and place it in their window at 7pm.*

We are all asked to “join in prayerful solidarity with this witness”, describing the candle as “a visible symbol of the light of life, Jesus Christ, the source of hope in this life.”

The following prayer can be used when lighting the candle:

For all that is good in life, thank you,
For the love of family and friends, thank you,
For the kindness of good neighbour and Samaritan stranger, thank you.

May those who are vulnerable, hungry or homeless, experience support,
May those who are sick, know healing,
May those who are anxious or bereaved, sense comfort.

Bless and guide political leaders and decision-makers, with wisdom,
Bless and guide health workers and key workers, with strength and well-being,
Bless and guide each one of us, as we adapt to a new way of living.

And may the light shining from our windows,
across road and wynd, glen and ben, kyle and isle,
be reflected in our hearts and hands and hopes.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

* Please take all necessary fire precautions when using a lit candle. Ensure you remain with the lit candle at all times, and do not leave it to burn if you leave the room. Ensure there are no fabrics or materials such as curtains near the candle.

Thank You, Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust

www.therebutnotthere.org.uk

Dumbarton: Riverside has been awarded 10 silhouettes funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust www.covenantfund.org.uk

www.covenantfund.org.ukWe really appreciate being included in the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities programme, which makes awards to bring communities together to remember; and to think about the Armed Forces today.

“There But Not There” is a project running across the UK for the centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 war, with silhouettes installed where the men and women came from across the country, back in the communities they left behind www.therebutnotthere.org.uk

The ten transparent silhouettes will be placed around the Sanctuary at Dumbarton: Riverside during Remembrance 2018, the centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 First World War, forming a striking and thought provoking presence for those sitting amongst them in the pews.www.therebutnotthere.org.uk

Riverside is the historic parish church of Dumbarton, with links to the former garrison in the Castle. We will hold a joint service with The West Kirk at Riverside on 11 November. For this year we are making plans to use projected photos, video-clips, display the war memorials, seeking to understand the different reactions people may have had on 11 November 1918. We are working on researching the names on the war memorials in conjunction with a local history group based in Dumbarton Library and the local Secondary School. The Boys Brigade will ring the bell in the evening. The Sunday School will be planting poppies and preparing a lunch, with war-time songs afterwards.
