Dumbarton: Riverside has been awarded 10 silhouettes funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust www.covenantfund.org.uk

www.covenantfund.org.ukWe really appreciate being included in the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities programme, which makes awards to bring communities together to remember; and to think about the Armed Forces today.

“There But Not There” is a project running across the UK for the centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 war, with silhouettes installed where the men and women came from across the country, back in the communities they left behind www.therebutnotthere.org.uk

The ten transparent silhouettes will be placed around the Sanctuary at Dumbarton: Riverside during Remembrance 2018, the centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 First World War, forming a striking and thought provoking presence for those sitting amongst them in the pews.www.therebutnotthere.org.uk

Riverside is the historic parish church of Dumbarton, with links to the former garrison in the Castle. We will hold a joint service with The West Kirk at Riverside on 11 November. For this year we are making plans to use projected photos, video-clips, display the war memorials, seeking to understand the different reactions people may have had on 11 November 1918. We are working on researching the names on the war memorials in conjunction with a local history group based in Dumbarton Library and the local Secondary School. The Boys Brigade will ring the bell in the evening. The Sunday School will be planting poppies and preparing a lunch, with war-time songs afterwards.
